Latest figures show Canada emits more than

1.5 MILLION

metric tons

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas causing over a quarter of global warming.

Methane is emitted from many sectors but in Canada it is responsible for over half of this dangerous pollution.

The Canadian government estimates oil and gas companies emit about 1.5  million tons of methane pollution each year, but scientists have found that Canada’s oil and gas industry is emitting much more methane than that.

A Call to Action for Policy Makers

Cutting oil and gas methane emissions in Canada is one of the cheapest, most effective ways to address climate change.  To solve this problem we need to improve the way methane is managed.

  • We need stronger standards that require companies to regularly check their facilities for leaks.
  • We need to replace old, leaky equipment with new devices that emit less pollution.
  • We need to hold companies accountable for excessive pollution.
  • We need to improve methane monitoring and reporting.

These strategies have been successfully implemented in other oil and gas producing regions across North America, and we need Canada to do the same.

Canada has pledged to help reduce 75% of methane emissions from the oil and gas industry, and recently proposed new protections to reduce emissions. Strong protections are essential to control climate pollution.

To lead on climate, Canada must cut methane

Methane is a potent greenhouse gas with huge climate potential.  Reducing emissions now can help slow the rate of global warming and limit the impacts of climate change.

Reducing emissions from oil and gas

One place where we can make a big impact is cutting methane emissions from the oil and gas industry.  Natural gas is mostly methane and over half of Canada’s methane pollution comes from the oil and gas sector.  This pollution not only warms the climate, it creates massive energy waste, deteriorates air quality and threatens public health.

The Canadian government estimates oil and gas companies emit about 1.5 million metric tons of methane pollution each year, but scientists have found that Canada’s oil and gas industry is emitting much more methane than that. Canada has set an ambitious goal to reduce 75% of oil and gas methane emissions by 2030, but stronger environmental protections will be critical to meet that goal.
